Found your site too late? Thank you for the information on cheap drill rigs. Unfortunately I just bought one and has all the junk you mentioned and haven't used it yet. I may just resell it on ebay where I found it and look for something like that 3 point used rig you have since I have a tractor to power it. This Rig I purchased has 250' of 1" china black pipe that is only sch ? and looks like it will fail at the threads. I am tempted to try the rig anyway and would be worth it IF I at least get one well dug with it. If I can sell my unused rig, I guess I would need a good HONDA HP pump too. The worst part is that I am doing this work in California and may be sorry for my hard headedness when all is said and done. Thanks again for your helpful site! Regards, Kim in California We want to start a drilling busness, but know nothing about drilling, your site has given us insight on what to look for, thanks for cutting through the red tape and telling it straight. I realize now that to make money drilling i don't just need any rig, but i need a rig that can do the job. Thanks Ben L. from kansas. Toy rigs VS real rigs. I see now what you mean, 5ft plumbing pipe and china engines are not for serious drilling. It may work for a shallow well, but real rock drilling takes torque, and plumbing pipe was made to plumb water in houses, not take the torque of a bit drilling in rock. But i do have to admit the cheaper prices are tempting. My out side plumbing pipe broke off just by hitting it with the push lawn mower, and thats not near as hard as the torque of 200ft of pipe down in the hole drilling.Keep up the good work. Harry C. Florida Only 30ft left to go! Hello, I just looked over your website and it has some great information on it! I have tried to drill a shallow well in my yard with one of the "toy" setups. Ended up losing a bit one time and twisting off the drill stem the other time but I was able to "fish" it out. What I need is a way to drill a 50' well. I know I will hit some rock at 20' and the good water is on the other side of that rock layer. Thanks Stan, I live up near Abilene, TX in the small town of Clyde, Tx., Answer from Drillingfab To drill rock, you have to have weight againest the bit for it to work properly. The toy pipe is to light. The problem is toy rig swivels, have no weight rating, so heavey drill collars would help them drill through rock, but would also gut the swivels they use. Also you may try using a small roller cone bit, it takes less torque to turn and may preform better for you. The bottom line is to drill rock, it takes more rig. More rig - equals more money. One poor boy opition is use a tripod, pulley and a weight with rope. Keep rasing and lowering sharp weight until the rock fractures enough to drill. This is labor intensive and also requires a sharp weight to use on tripod. The only other option is spend more money and get the right equipment. The nice thing about buying the toy rigs, is you do help boost the yard sale inventory. |
