What you need to do is find is a traffic sign rental contractors in your area. There are 100s of highway equipment rental contrators nation wide. When you see road constuction signs with blinking lights and a solar panel on top while driving, please look closely there should be a small sign with the contractors name on it, ( sample - road co sign rental ) look up contractors phone number and call them. They rent these to the state hi-way dept all over the USA.
Ask for the shop maintaince manager or head mechanic and ask him for free damaged panels.
If you have kids who enjoy doing experments, have them ask. Most companies love to help kids doing a school or class project. Most all traffic rental sign contractors have free solar panels that have some cracks or slightly damaged when drunk drivers hit the parked sign trailers. They replace them and through away the damaged ones. We started asking for them and they let us have them for free. most of the panels work but only put off 50% to 75% power off, but for free ,whos complaining when they cost 2200.00 each new.
If you can go there in person it is better. If you call you may get the first girl who answers the phone that has no decision power and who does not care to help.
If you go there in person and be freindly it works much better. Now we have it so when they get some in they call us to pick them up. At first we offered to pay something for them so we would not look like free loaders.Once they see your not a jerk looking for freebees they treat you nicer.

One more tip, I have seen solar panels on craigslist for sale cheap. There are many reasons why or how people get these solar panels. Some are surplus, and some are service techs who replace solar panels for large companies and get to keep and sell the surplus solar panels. Use key words (used solar panels) on www.craigslsit.org Any purchases you make, make sure you receive a bill of sale, in case of any foul play unaware, you will be protected.

We did many hours of research and test. Windmills are age old, and work in remote places. But the problem with windmills is the cost 4500.00 each and take 3 men, 3 days to errect, plus need service done 2 to 4 times per year.

Windmills are nice to look at, i admit, but the days of them are numbered with the lower cost, ease of set up, and no service on tall towers, and other dangers of the windmills. Solar D/C pumps and solar panels are the way to.
Even though we have electric where our home is, we choose to use solar pump and panel for the house. If power goes out, we still have water, with no electric bill.

One thing to remember about electric cars, and why they are not a good idea, and just a scam. No electric car is green. The amount of batterys needed and in 6 months needed again. Plus when driving your clean green car, how do you charge it. 82% of all electric power is generated from dirty coal power plants. So you may feel better when driving, that there is no emissions, but remember 24/7 even on christmas the coal power plants are burning coal to keep the electric gride going. Coal is the cheapest form of making electric power right now. I like green things, but lets not promote things that make people feel good ( like 0 emission electric cars when it takes dirty coal to charge it. Just because you dont see the coal power plants does not change anything. Thats the problem with a lot of green products, they are not pratical, just make people feel good, yet do nothing.
